1. Annotate under letters to show their value

2. A number before a letter means how many lots of that letter so 
2a = 2 x a
5b = 5 x b

3. When crossing over an equals do the inverse operation eg. 
a + 4 = 12                __ + 4 = 12
a = 12 – 4 
a = 8
