Adding and subtracting fractions
Method
1. When the denominators are the same, just add or subtract the numerators
2. Do not add or subtract the denominators, they stay the same
3. When the denominators are not the same, find the common denominator
4. To find a common denominator find the lowest number both denominators are factors of OR multiply the denominators together and use the answer as your common denominator
5. Once you’ve found the common denominator, whatever you multiplied the denominator by you also multiply the numerator by – equivalent fractions
6. Then either add or subtract the numerators. The denominators stay the same
